Be Unique.

May 26, 2010

Over the past few months, I’ve been helping my friend move into her new house. Our most recent project: primer and paint the 6 foot privacy fence surrounding the yard. (Yes, this is a very good friend. And no, I won’t help you move.)

As I rolled paint on boards ever which way I could, I was reminded of the Karate Kid and all those chores Daniel-san ended up doing for Mr. Miyagi.

Did you know there’s a Karate Kid remake coming out? I don’t remember  much about the original film beyond “Wax on, wax off” (and how cute Ralph Macchio looked in the 18 x 20 poster on my bedroom wall) but remakes never seem to measure up.

It’s fun to copy—to mimic. But if you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times, “The remake wasn’t nearly as good as the original.”

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” —Dr. Seuss

Looking and sounding like everyone else is exhausting and no one's impressed by the replica. The good news is you’re far better off playing your own character than being a rerun.

There’s no one else like you in the world. You are completely unique.

And how do you describe that uniqueness you possess? And how will people find out about it? Hmm...funny how branding and marketing always comes up.

Move over Ralph Macchio? I don’t think so. Will Smith’s kid is pretty adorable but I’m not devoting any wall space to him.

You’re an original. Now act like one.
