A Crisis of Human Resources

April 18, 2016

Do you ever get that Sunday night back-to-school feeling? You know, that sinking feeling when you begin to dread the work week?

Many people don’t enjoy what they do. They endure it, rather than experience it and they simply wait for the weekend to feel alive again, if only for 48 hours.

Arts education expert, Sir Ken Robinson believes we are facing a “crisis of human resources.” He believes we make poor use of our talents—the most important one being that of the creativity of the human mind.

You see, we were led to believe that if we follow a specific, linear path through school and college, we will be rewarded with an easy life, a respectable career and a certain amount of comfortable, middle-class living.

But life is not linear. Though we may think we’ve prepared ourselves, life may have other ideas. The twists and turns are rarely anticipated. The budget cuts that lead to job cuts—we don’t see them coming and we’re unprepared to switch careers mid-stream.

In fact, we may even spend a good portion of our lives uncovering our true talents. In her book, Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert defines creative living in this way, “The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them. The hunt to uncover those jewels—that’s creative living.”
